Mattress for children: how to choose the right one?

Choosing the right mattress for your child is crucial for his well-being, to ensure him always a healthy and peaceful rest. Each child, however, has different needs and habits, even when it comes to rest. Given the variety of children’s mattresses available on the market, finding the most suitable model may not be so easy. Before purchasing, you will need to evaluate different aspects, such as the quality and type of materials, the size, the level of comfort, the degree of rigidity and the type of support provided by the mattress.

Would you like to buy a mattress for your child but do not know how to orient yourself in the choice? Here are some tips to find the perfect model for your needs and ensure your little one has a quality rest.

How should a children’s mattress be?

Mattresses for children must be chosen with care, in order to ensure maximum comfort and safety for children. A good mattress for children should be made of quality materials, breathable and designed to disperse moisture and ensure children always have a dry and comfortable sleep. It should also provide optimal support, without being too stiff or, on the contrary, too soft, and adapt perfectly to the shape of the body.

In addition, a mattress for children should perfectly match the size of the cot (which generally range from 60 x 120 to 60×130 cm for children from 0 to 5 years), so that there are no gaps between the bed frame and the mattress. This is essential for safety, to prevent children from getting stuck between the bars or getting hurt by slipping off the mattress if it is too small.

Aspects to consider before buying a children’s mattress

To choose the right mattress for your child you will need to consider several factors, first of all the size and level of comfort, but also other aspects, including:

  • perspiration: make sure that the outer fabrics and the materials with which the mattress is made are breathable and promote the dispersion of body moisture to ensure children a healthy, dry and fresh rest, even in the hottest seasons;
  • easy cleaning: try to choose a mattress easily washable and hygienic, with a removable cover and that can be washed comfortably in the washing machine (like all mattresses for children proposed by Mollyflex) to ensure a healthier sleep. Washing the lining regularly, in fact, is essential to eliminate any bacteria or dirt residues that could cause discomfort and irritation, especially for infants, young children and allergy sufferers;
  • thickness: is one of the fundamental aspects to consider before buying a mattress for children. A good mattress should be between 10 and 15 cm thick. Lower mattresses, in fact, may not provide the right support and an optimal level of comfort; higher mattresses could instead protrude from the bed structure, without any additional comfort;
  • density, another very important feature, which indicates the level of support that the mattress is able to ensure and its ability to keep the spine well aligned. In particular, the density expresses the amount of matter contained in a cubic meter and is measured in kg/m³. Generally, the higher the density, the more the mattress will provide support and durability. Children’s mattresses should not have a density either too high (and therefore be too rigid), nor too low;
  • materials: for infants and children in the early years of life are recommended mattresses made with certified fabrics, with antibacterial and anti mite properties and with an anti-suffocation structure. Polyurethane foam mattresses are particularly suitable for children. Being an open cell foam, obtained without the use of CFC, this material guarantees a very high level of breathability, and therefore of hygiene, essential to ensure children a healthy and comfortable rest. In addition to being hypoallergenic, durable and ergonomic, polyurethane foam mattresses promote the dissipation of body heat, preventing the accumulation of dust and residues. The polyurethane used to produce Mollyflex mattresses meets precise standards that certify the complete safety of the products, even if used by younger children;
  • type of cover: the lining fabric will be in direct contact with the skin. This is why it is important to choose a breathable, non-toxic and hypoallergenic coating, which is gentle even on the most sensitive skin, such as Oeko-Tex 9001 certified fabrics, and ensure that the materials used in the mattress structure are CertiPUR certified.

Choosing a mattress for children: other useful tips for parents

In addition to choosing a quality mattress, suitable for the needs of children, to ensure your child a healthy and comfortable rest you can follow a few simple steps:

  • ventilate the room and mattress often, removing the sheets to avoid dust accumulation. Wash the mattress cover and mattress cover regularly, as well as sheets, pillowcases and bed linen, to ensure your child maximum hygiene and avoid possible irritation or allergic reactions;
  • try to create an environment that is as cozy, quiet and restful as possible: keep an adequate temperature in the bedroom (better if not higher than 21 hours) and in the evening and night adjust the lighting so that it is not too intense;
  • choose a pillow for children comfortable, hygienic and suitable for the needs of children, which properly supports the head, back and neck.
