How to wash the mattress cover: tips and tricks

A good mattress is essential for a healthy and restful sleep. The choice of the mattress cover is equally important for the quality of your rest,  to keep the mattress always clean and keep its characteristics longer. The use of the mattress cover allows you to protect the mattress from dust, dirt or stains, and thus prolong its life.

On the market you can find different types of mattress covers, designed to meet different needs. If you have allergies, for example, you could opt for a hypoallergenic mattress cover, or anti-microbial and anti-mite protection to prevent the formation of bacteria and odors and prevent the proliferation of mites. If you have pets at home, you might want to choose a waterproof mattress cover instead to give the mattress more protection and hygiene.

Once you have chosen the right mattress cover, you will need to make sure that you wash it properly and carefully follow the instructions for good maintenance. With proper care, in fact, the mattress cover will keep your mattress as new longer. So let’s see together how to wash it and all the useful tips for its maintenance and cleaning.

How to wash the mattress cover in a few simple steps

Washing the mattress cover is a very simple process and can be done in a few simple steps. Generally, the mattress covers can be washed in the washing machine, at 40 or 60 degrees, depending on the model and the type of materials with which they are made, but in some cases specific washing programs or temperatures may be necessary.

Incorrect washing methods or too high temperatures could damage the fabric and reduce the life of the mattress cover. Too low temperatures, on the contrary, may not be enough to eliminate mites, stains and dirt residues, thus making cleaning ineffective.

To avoid mistakes, before washing, it is always better to read the instructions on the label. Some mattress covers, such as polyester or cotton, can be safely washed in the washing machine at 60, but other types of fabrics may require special washing programs for delicate items. There are also special mattress covers - such as the Meditex mattress cover with special antimicrobial protection or the waterproof mattress cover by Mollyflex - that can be washed at 95° without any alteration of the fabric characteristics, thus ensuring perfect hygiene.

How often to wash the mattress cover

To give your mattress optimal protection, the mattress cover should be cleaned and sanitized regularly, just like bed linen and sheets. There is no precise rule: you can wash the mattress cover more or less frequently depending on your needs and your specific needs. In general, however, to avoid the accumulation of mites or dirt residues, it is advisable to wash it at least once a month.

Keep in mind that in summer the body tends to sweat more during the night: in this season, therefore, it is better to wash the mattress cover more often, once a week or every two weeks to avoid the formation of mold, bad smells and bacteria.

If you happen to stain the mattress cover, try to wash it or remove surface stains as soon as possible. In this case, you can use a mild detergent and a damp cloth to clean it, gently rubbing it on the surface. Make sure you rinse the area thoroughly and let the mattress cover air dry before putting it back on the mattress.

If you do not want to wash it in a hurry, you can buy more than one and alternate them depending on the season: this way your mattress will always be protected and you can sanitize the mattress cover in depth.
