How to choose a mattress based on the type of back pain

Cover tipi mal di schiena

Waking up with a stiff, sore or tired back is a warning sign that should not be underestimated: often, the cause is not only to be found in daily habits or stress, but in the mattress we sleep on every night.

The right mattress can make a big difference: it supports the spine, promotes correct posture during rest and relieves muscle tension. But not all back pain is the same and not all mattresses respond in the same way.

In this guide, we will analyse the main types of back pain (lumbar, dorsal and cervical) and give you specific advice on choosing the mattress that best suits your needs.

Lumbar back pain: the most common

Lumbar pain is located in the lower back. It can be caused by poor posture, a sedentary lifestyle, hernias, physical exertion or an unsuitable mattress.

Recommended mattress: medium-firm and ergonomic support

A mattress that is too soft tends to cause the lumbar area to sink, worsening the curvature of the spine. It is better to opt for:

  • High-density memory foam mattresses, which mould to the body without giving way too much.
  • Structures with differentiated support zones, which offer calibrated support to different parts of the body.
  • Anatomical mattresses, designed for those with chronic or structural problems in the lumbar area.

Extra tip: memory foam combined with a firmer support layer is ideal for those suffering from lower back pain, as it offers comfort without compromising stability.

Back pain: pay attention to your posture at night

Back pain affects the central area of the back, between the shoulder blades and the upper lumbar region. It is less common than lower back pain and is linked to muscle tension, incorrect movements during sleep or, once again, inadequate beds.

Recommended mattress: balanced, with even support

The aim is to avoid localised tension and keep the entire spine in a neutral position.

  • Choose a mattress with good adaptability, but which offers even support along the entire length of the back.
  • Pocket springs combined with memory foam can be a valid solution: the structure provides support and the memory foam provides comfort.

Extra tip: also consider a new slatted base, because if it is too flexible or outdated, it can contribute to the problem.

Neck pain: pay attention to your pillow too

Neck pain affects the upper part of the spine, particularly the neck. It can radiate to the shoulders, arms and head, causing headaches and stiffness.

Recommended mattress: comfortable but not too soft

The cervical spine must be well aligned with the rest of the spine, both when lying on your back and on your side.

  • Choose a mattress that adapts to the shape of your body, avoiding areas that are too firm.
  • The ideal solution is a memory foam mattress combined with an ergonomic neck pillow suited to your sleeping position.

Extra tip: if you sleep on your side, the pillow should fill the space between your shoulder and head. If you sleep on your back, a lower pillow is better.

Other factors to consider when choosing a mattress

Please note: we must remember that, in addition to the type of back pain, there are other aspects to consider when choosing the right mattress. The main ones are:

The position in which you sleep

  • On your side: choose a comfortable mattress that respects the natural curves of your body.
  • On your back: medium-firm support is best.
  • On your stomach: requires a firm mattress to avoid lumbar arching.

Your body weight

A mattress suited to your build helps maintain the balance between comfort and support. Generally:

  • Light weight: softer or medium mattresses are best.
  • Heavy weight: firmer structures that do not sag over time are best.

Materials and breathability

All Mollyflex mattresses are made with breathable memory foam, but the cover is also important: it is best if it is removable, washable and antibacterial.
