The best bed pillows for neck pain

Best bed pillows for neck pain

We know how quality sleep is crucial for overall well-being, and one of the crucial aspects in achieving this is the choice of the right accessories, such as a pillow (or pillow).

If you suffer from neck pain or muscular tension in the neck, choosing the right pillow can make a big difference: neck problems are in fact one of the most common sleep disorders, and the use of an inappropriate pillow can exacerbate the situation, increasing pain or stiffness upon waking.

In this article we will explore which pillows are most suitable for those suffering from neck problems, focusing on the materials, shapes and features that make them particularly effective.

Why is the pillow so important for the neck?

The pillow/pillow has the function of supporting the head and neck during sleep, keeping the spine in a natural, aligned position.

When the head is not adequately supported, in fact, the posture may be wrong, the neck may assume a forced position that can cause pain and muscle stiffness. In particular, neck pain is linked to tension and inflammation in the neck muscles and cervical vertebrae, and it is essential that the pillow provides the right support to alleviate these symptoms.

An incorrect pillow can therefore make the situation much worse, whereas a good pillow can promote correct posture and reduce the risk of pain.

Characteristics of cervical pillows

When looking for a neck pillow, it is important to consider several characteristics. First of all, remember that an ideal pillow must be able to keep the head and neck in a neutral position, without exerting excessive pressure or causing an abnormal curvature of the spine. But let’s take a closer look at other useful aspects when choosing the right neck pillow.

1. Ergonomic support

Ergonomic pillows are designed to adapt to the shape of the neck and head, providing the right support for the cervical spine. These pillows have a shape that helps keep the head aligned with the body, reducing tension on the neck muscles and improving posture during sleep.

There are different models, some with a wave shape, others with specific neck support, which may be more suitable for those suffering from chronic neck pain.

2. Anatomical and breathable materials

Memory foam pillows are among the most popular for cervical sufferers, as they adapt perfectly to the shape of the neck and head, distributing weight evenly and relieving pressure points.

Memory foam has the advantage of being a highly adaptable material that moulds to body heat. However, an important aspect to consider is the breathability of the material, as memory foam tends to retain heat. For this reason, many cervical pillows are made with ‘open-cell’ memory foam or with covers in breathable fabrics, such as cotton or microfibre, to ensure greater ventilation.

Other materials that can be useful for cervical pillows are latex and gel. Latex is an elastic and breathable material that offers good support, while temperature-regulating gel, often combined with memory foam, helps maintain an optimal temperature during the night, preventing the pillow from becoming too hot.

3. Height and hardness of the pillow

Another important factor when choosing a pillow bed is the height: if a pillow is too high or too low, it may force the neck into an unnatural position, causing tension.

Cervical pillows are generally designed to offer a middle ground, with support that keeps the head and neck aligned with the spine. There are also height-adjustable pillows, allowing you to adjust them to suit your comfort needs.

The hardness of the pillow also plays a key role: a pillow that is too hard may be uncomfortable and cause increased tension, while one that is too soft may not offer the necessary support. Orthopaedic neck pillows are often designed with a medium or high density to offer the right compromise between comfort and support.

4. Form and design

Neck pillows come in different shapes and designs: in addition to the traditional rectangular pillows, many ergonomic models have a wave shape or a more pronounced area for neck support.

Some pillows are designed with a lower central part that allows the head to be positioned naturally, while the higher side part adequately supports the neck area. Other models include recesses to accommodate the head so that it is perfectly aligned with the body.

The most recommended types of pillows if you have neck pain

There are types of pillows best suited for those with problems in the neck area and there are mainly three:

  1. Memory Foam pillow with gel
These pillows combine the softness and adaptability of memory foam with the coolness of gel, which regulates temperature and helps keep the pillow cool during the night. They are ideal for those looking for a pillow that adapts perfectly to the shape of the head and neck, improving cervical support.
  2. Ergonomic latex pillow
Latex is a natural and breathable material, ideal for those looking for a pillow that does not retain heat and offers good support. Latex pillows are elastic and durable, and their ergonomic shape helps keep the spine aligned.
  3. Wave-shaped orthopaedic pillow
Wave-shaped pillows are designed to follow the natural shape of the neck and head, reducing pressure and promoting relaxation of the neck muscles. These pillows are often made of memory foam or similar materials, and are particularly suitable for those suffering from neck pain.
